Pinch and Zoom

Hi,

I know that the mag+ system doesn't really need pinch and zoom, but an increasing amount of our subscribers are asking for it.
I think that because the rest of iOS supports this, they have become accustomed to doing it and expect all apps to follow suit.

Is it possible to implement this, but still keep the scrolling ability. I don't want to mess with HTML if I don't have to.

Best

Hi David -

I hear you - that's a tough one from a system level. Because the whole Mag+ architecture is designed to allow you to create content that is native to the canvas, pinching and zooming will actually break that (ie, you'd have to scroll around to see all the content that you can then scroll). The one way we have discussed enhancing this is to make each box or group individually zoomable - similar to how it is done now with the Feature Builder, but native to the plug-in rather than having to step through HTML. That way if you really wanted to, you could do a B-layer only design and make the whole page zoomable.

However, I would strongly discourage that as our user testing has shown that >having< to zoom to read something is a very bad user experience. If many of your customers are asking for the pinch and zoom, it may be worth taking a look at the page design to see if maybe some text elements are hard to read as is.

Thanks, Mike. Completely understand your take on this and in our magazine there is absolutely no reason to pinch and zoom. I just think that the user expects such functionality as it is so entrenched in the OS, so when it isn't there – they complain. In fact virtually every complaint we get is about us 'disabling' pinch and zoom.

We could make each and every image a popup (which is what they really want, I guess), but that is so time consuming and with the retina display we would be heading into gigabyte download territory.

Thanks anyway. Still the best system out there for those who want control over their mags and apps.

Check this out (I guess we should have named-checked you guys).

Pinch and zoom would ALSO add to the size of the download though, as it isn't vector type we're dealing with in these interactive layouts, they're rasterized. So for a retina display you'd be looking at pretty large files if you enabled some type of zoom. Darned if you do, darned if you don't. :-)
