Android Simulator

Hello!

Why Mag+ dont provide a Android simulator, like IOS?

In Brazil we have a large base of android tablets, and i think will be very important have a one simulator.

Some people think to use a Google SDK for simulate and test apps, but soooo slow (specialy in Macs), but a great app-designers uses a "virtual android emulation", and you can find more infos here: http://www.android-x86.org or http://www.android-dev.ro/2012/02/22/android-x86-virtualbox-support

Its fast an stable. I try to get a revisioner in Google Play through a emulator (ICS 4.04 version and Honeycomb flavours) and dont have success.

Is really important to Mag+ know a reality of our market, and how important have a android simulator is.

Brazilian market is fully of low cost tablets (7 and 9 inches in most, with 800x600 resolution), and is important to us test a app in major formats

Best regards

Hi Luiz -

I'll run this by our Android developers and see what's possible!

Hi Luiz -

I spoke with our Android developers and they recommended using our standard Reviewer APK with an Android emulator. It should run just fine on that.

Hi Guys,

have anyone succeeded in importing mib files to mag+ reviewer installed on android emulator?

I have tried with original android emulator and with bluestacks. I am able to install mag+ reviewer on both of them and login to mag+ account. but when i get IP address, and try to open it in a browser or put in the production tool, it doesn`t work.

Is there any other way to upload my content to android emulator?

thanks!

I know Bluestacks, but dont have used yet...

I run a android emulator in a virtualbox machine, and next week I'll try install de revisioner.apk and run many tests (still so busy until saturday!!!)

If you like to try this emulation mode, can you get more information in http://www.buildroid.org/blog/?page_id=121

I sucessfull running (with full internet acess) in macpro with lion 10.7.4, macbookpro core2duo and windows7 64 in core2duo machine.

Dear Luiz.

Thanks for information about Buildroid. It was easy to install VirtualBox and Buildroid in it. I did it on mac mini with Lion and it works perfectly. It has no Google Play, but with browser it was easy to download Mag+ Reviewer directly from  http://support.magplus.com/entries/21704968 and I installed it using Astro file manager found in applications. Reviewer works and shows some IP address, but it don't allow to log-in: "Login failed - user authentication failed" (I'm sure I entered right name and password), and because of it (I guess) Production tool and Mag+ Plug-in fails to push verticals.

Just after installation the virtual android device had IP: 10.0.0.3 and I thought that may be the reason for errors, so I set Network Adapter 1 as Bridged adapter, en0: Ethernet and it get normally looking IP address (192.168....), but it didn't help. If you find the solution please us know. If you'll also find the way to simulate rotating device - that would be great.

Hi Tomasz!

I will try install and chance configurations of IP adress, and post all results...

Has a many versions of buildroid, and one of then has a market and other googles apps. You can use the buildroid_vbox86t_4.0.3_r1-20120518_gapps.ova version (you can find the link in the middle of buildroid page, link above, or you can direct download in http://buildroid.org/Download/buildroid_vbox86t_4.0.3_r1-20120518_gapps.ova )

Best regards

Hi Luiz. Finally I found one option that was mentioned by buildroid creator - Host-only network which is to be set at network adapter 1. You have to add one Host-only network in VirtualBox own preferences and after that it can be attached to network adapter 1 of android virtual machine. Bad news is that it changes nothing in working of Mag+ Reviewer (except IP address), but maybe it's a little step forward to make it work.

One more thing - if you find how to force screen rotation in Buildroid/VirtualBox (on mac) and share this knowledge - I'll be thankful. I was trying many key combinations without success, but it's neccessary to test designs in both orientations.

Hi Guys -

This is from our lead Android developer:

This is something we never tested but in theory it should work... However it's very dependent on how the emulator is set up, network configurations, proxy servers etc so supporting this is a bit out of our hands...

There are so many other problems with developing a Mib only on a emulator ( which is actually running on a powerful computer ). The mib is very likely to perform very differently or even crash due to different memory configurations etc so this is something we really don't recommend.

Hi again, Thomasz!

You can add a regular IP (like IOs simulator) changing the settings of virtual machine in VBox (see snapshots attached). Just working, and mag+revisioner uses the native machine IP and port 50000.

For rotation, you can install and use "Ultimate roration control" (search in googleplay). After install, select "Reverse Landscape" in "Current Location". (see snapshots attached).

Mike, the google SDK is very very very slow, is uselles, doesnt matter what kind of machine you have. The only way to run a decent "android environment" it is through VirtualBox, I know the virtual android and mag+ reviewer isn't the best way to test MIBs, but give us a good preview for major devices. Like i say, here in Brazil we have a hugh brands of generic tablets, and the "virtual mag+ plus" allow to test a generic view for all.

Dear Luiz
I see your Reviewer works in Buildroid - just as mine do, but have you registered with your login and password with success? Did you review verticals in this environment properly?

Hi, is there any update or recommendation on the reviewer if I want to run it on mac?

Review in Android simulator on Mac WORKS (I think on PC too)

After few months again I tried reviewing in Mag+ Reviewer in Android simulator. Software I used before without success was upgraded so I started with removing old versions and installing new.

So here's what you need:

Oracle VirtualBox:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

androVM:

http://androvm.org/blog/download/

(take version: vbox86t version with gapps & houdini & flash to have google play in it, "t" in name is for tablet)

  1. Install VirtualBox, open it
  2. Double click on androVM .ova file to install it in VirtualBox (it will be treated as linux/other linux)
  3. It runs with default settings, so you don't have to change anything
  4. Select your new virtual machine on left bar and press Start
  5. As Android starts you have to set it up as standard Android tablet (language, gmail etc.)
  6. Virtual tablet starts with 1024x600 px resolution and without bottom status bar, so click right top "applications" icon and then "androVM Conriguration"
Change resolution to 1280x800-16, 160 dpi, check "Force StatusBar", save (it will restart VM).
  7. IMPORTANT! In "androVM Conriguration" you'll also find IP Management address on the top - this is address you must enter in InDesign or Production Tool
  8. Use Google Play app to install Mag+ Reviewer, open it, log in using User Settings (You shoud see: "Login succeeded…" info)
  9. Voila, it works. You can review your designs.

Keyboard shortcuts in androVM:

Home: home button

End: lock button

Esc: back button

Everything elese works with your keyboard and mouse

Shutting down simulator: sometimes it works with holding End key and then using android dialog, cmd+Q makes hard shut down (with Virtual Box dialog)

Changing orientation: landscape-portrait

Please search for something free in Google play with "screen rotation" phrase, I found it working, but it is unusable for some reasons: 1. simulator becomes very laggy, 2. picture is sliced in few places 3. it not fits on monitor, and scaling in VirtualBox e.g 50% is unavailable, you can switch to scale mode but it scales screen to square. Maybe rotating LCD will be better soution.

Simulator compared to real Android device:

I found some webpage I linked to in my mag+ design didn't want to display in internal browser, and mp4 videos did't wanted to play in simulated android too… I use Mag+ Reviewer on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and these two things work on real tablet, so there is some more work to make it fully usable, but for basic reviewing it's OK.

Has there been any updates to the Android Reviewer? Can we get an updated APK file?

The emulators are helpful for testing devices we may not directly own, but trying to find updated versions of all the toolkits around Mag+ (iOS simulator, android simulator, mib optimizer) is very difficult.
