Popup behaviour change since 5.0 update

Hi, I've been working on a project using v4.3, with verticals that had grouped popups.

Since the 5.0 update, the implementation of popups has changed, which is good in terms of flexibility of the popup content, but it seems to have caused some issues both with the plugin and in-app:

1) All items on the Bp layer are now _de facto _popups. This seems logical to some extent, however prior to 5.0 it was recommended to place any items ungrouped from the background (eg, text boxes with object states for fade-ins, or objects with linked hotspots) on the Bp layer to preserve their transparency. Altho one solution I've found is to move any non-popups to the (one higher) "B - Slides - Pinned Blocks" layer, this is frustrating to have to do for multiple large verticals with large numbers of objects on the Bp layer, just to achieve 5.0 compliance (the alternative is change the 'initially visible' attribute of every single object). In future would it not be more practical to have the bottom B layer capable of honouring all transparencies even in non-grouped objects? Especially as Popup objects on Bp layer appear OVER the higher-level "pinned blocks" layer anyway, when reviewed in-app?

2) Since the 5.0 update, there seems to be a change in initial behaviour with grouped popups, in the app. On first view of a vertical, if a hotspot is pressed to bring up a grouped popup, the existing popup of that group disappears BEFORE the new popup fades in. This only happens initially (once the group has been cycled, the behaviour seems to return to expected - possible preloading/caching issue?), and has been reproduced on two separate test iPads.

3) Finally (sorry for this epic!), the standard behaviour for grouped popups seems to be:

  • place active popup on top layer.
  • fade in active popup.
  • hide previous popup underneath

...would it be possible to implement a 'fade out' of the previous popup, rather than just a hard switch to zero opacity? As it is a bit ugly, if the grouped popups aren't all in the same place, to see one fade in and the other just suddenly switch off...

Thanks for your help, anyway.

Hello Olly,

Could you send over an InDesign vertical file that contains popups you're having trouble with so we can take a look at how you have them setup. We need to confirm that there is in fact a problem with how our new tools handle your particular popup setup and that it is designed the way it is intended.

As for the fade transition, we always welcome and encourage you to share your ideas with us so we can ensure our product fits your needs.  I'd encourage you to add this request to our "Feature Request" forum, where other users can add their vote. You can do that here:

This forum is monitored regularly and every request is taken into consideration for future releases.

Hi Mike - thanks for your reply. What's the best way to send you the file? I would rather not post it onto the forum, if that's ok?

I'll also add those feature requests, thanks for the link.

Also having trouble with pop ups on B layer. I have 2 pop ups on the B layer, which rendered a white box. Of course grouping these items (with background items) to rid of the white pops corrupts the ability to use the popup. Help!?

Hi Lauren - if you attach the InDesign vertical in which you're having the problem with pop-ups it would help Mike and/or others investigate.

Hi there Lauren,

It could be that when you are grouping these items that you are losing the Object IDs associated with the Popups so you would need to re-assign the Object IDs to an object or objects on your corresponding layer.  If you are still having trouble with this feel free to send over an InDesign file as Nathan mentioned and we can take a look!
