app crashing when reader swipes up additional vertical

Hi all,

I have 4.2 as my app and issues are free so I didn't update to the next version for iOS7.  I will do it tonight as it appears not all is OK.

Here's the problem.

The HangarSphere Magazine app is crashing when the reader swipes "up" to read additional verticals that utilize dual layering. In the "Reviewer" this did not happen at all. It is happening for iOS 7 ipads and all generations (1,2,3,4 mini). Back issues are causing the app to crash as well.

I know it is Saturday but I could really use some help. Updating to latest MagPlus version ASAP.

Guys!  This is an iOS 7 related issue. I should have been more proactive to update to the latest magplus version but I let me guard down when they said it would only affect those who have "Paid" issues. Mine was free. Creating a new build now and will submit to apple ASAP. What a PITA.

I was cautious about upgrading so I wouldn't get burned as when I updated to 4.2, it caused some of the slide shows within the magazine to fail and I had to go back and fix all my back issues. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't!!!!!

Thanks,

Lars

Hi Lars,

I just received messages from some of our readers and they are having the same problem with the 4.2.2 version of the app. App is crashing when swiping up any vertical. I submitted an update last Thursday. Hopefully these issues will be resolved with the 4.3.1 update.

Hope your update is approved soon!

Regards,

Nathan

Thanks Nathan. Glad to hear I'm not alone. What's funny is that I installed the beta of iOS 7 when it came out and noticed this occurring right away. It is blatantly obvious and assumed that the developers at mag+ would have corrected that right away. It seems they were only focused on the paid issues that might be come free when iOS 7 went live.

I updated the app with the new build last night. It was accepted but I got an email from apple saying that some recommended images were not 76 pixels square and not a PNG file. Another warning was a mismatch batch of some kind. I didn't change a single item and just rebuilt the app in Publish and uploaded. Have questions in emails to magplus support staff that will hopefully be addressed Monday morning.

Keep in touch

Lars

Ps what magazine is yours?

No problem, Lars. It's weird because I had been working with the beta of iOS 7 and hadn't had any problems with the app crashing. I still can't replicate this bug with the devices I have. I have noticed that the 'long press for menu' no longer works for me and that videos no longer autoplay when swiping through a magazine. Videos do seem to work when the vertical is accessed from the scrubber.

I received the same warning messages as you when I submitted my latest build. As far as I understand from the latest messages posted by Amie, they shouldn't cause the app to be rejected. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Nathan.

I was so frustrated with iOS 7 beta that I reloaded iOS 6. Are the anomalies happening on everyone's device or just an occasional few? I will definitely keep fingers crossed. Let's keep each other in the loop.

Have you had a lot of success with your pricing model and your premium hard copies? Are you the owner, designer, publisher, editor or all of the above like I am?
BTW-I will tell my friend about your magazine. He is from St. Louis, MO but lives in Seville Spain where he teaches English. His wife is from Seville.

Best,
Lars

Thanks a lot, Lars. I appreciate it. I've only received two message from customers that are having this problem. But, who knows, there could be more. It seems as though the crashing is happening on verticals that are 2 or more pages and have snapping enabled. For example, I just downloaded your Fall 2013 issue and I can swipe up on the 'How to' and 'Contents' pages without a problem. However, the app crashes when I try to swipe to the second page of the 'Piecing it Together' vertical. What's strange is that this doesn't happen to me when viewing any of the issues I've downloaded from my app.

I'm co-owner of the magazine. We have a small 3-man team. I'm in charge of editing, page- and tablet-design, distribution and web design and development. So far we've had some success. Hopefully things will pick up now that school has started. Everything stops here during the summer. Let your friend know that if he needs anything that he can contact me directly through the contact page on our website. I can even send him a copy of the magazine if he'd like. All the best, Nathan

Lars,

As it appears that Nathan was able to answer some of your questions, please let us know if you continue to have any problems once your app is updated or if you have any further questions in the interim.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the follow up. Does the latest version take these types of crashes into account?

Lars

Lars,

There were some stability improvements applied to our latest update so it would not hurt to update.  Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to know for sure is to test because files can be built very differently & act differently on different build versions and/or devices.

If this does not seem to resolve the problem, feel free to send over some of the troublesome InDesign files and MIB files & I'd be happy to investigate further.

Thanks Mike,

Layering and snapping of A and B layers is a common feature of MagPlus and I consider it one of its primary components. I don't do the layout but are there that many ways to layout the A and B layers that the app would crash? All of my back issues with articles that utilize this function all cause the app to crash. I hope the new version takes care of it. It would be expensive to redo.

Do you need the production files and the MIBs?  I'll get them and send them over via Dropbox. Can you email me your email address and I'll send you an invite to a shared folder?  Lars@TangoTen.com

Thanks,

Lars

Lars,

I do not have a Dropbox account linked to my company email, I could open up a private support ticket & you could send me a direct download link if you'd like to try that route.  Will that work for you?

I was having the same issue. Now I just built the new 4.3.1 app and submitted. Got this whole string of error messages. Should I be concerned?

Hi Lars - Quick note. I just downloaded the 4.3 update for HangarSphere and have looked through the Fall 2013 issue. I was able to swipe and navigate through the entire issue without any crashing. Looks like the 4.3 update fixed the problem. Hope it does as well for mine!

Jimmy, Mike, and Nathan!

It appears that 4.3.1 is the magic bullet. Everything got approved by apple yesterday afternoon. I released the app and updated it. All worked, even the back issues. It was nervewracking on that first swipe on the dual layer thinking the app would crash but it didn't. All back issues function well, too. I even noticed that when putting a finger on a slide show, you could still swipe up and pull the next vertical into view. Before, the reader had to find real estate to swipe outside of the picture. (It's the little things, right?) So far so good.

Good luck to the rest of you.

Jimmy,

We are aware of these warnings & as they are just warnings, your app submission will still go through & should not be rejected because of them.  Please see our announcement about the warnings here:
