Need better documentation for Popups

I'm trying to create popups for a demo and it's ridiculously frustrating the new tools and functions. All seems easy in video tutorial but completely un-intuitive in actual practice. You click this, you click that and voila...oops crashed the reviewer!

Oh, I followed this tutorial page and another video in your blog.  http://support.magplus.com/entries/21007338-adding-popups-to-your-designs

You have got to be better than this if you are serious about competing against Adobe's DPS. This is not to say folio panel/builder is that much easier to use, yet, it's much easier to find actual working solutions on their website or elsewhere.

I easily spent an hour on trying to figure this out...I'm starting to think there is something wrong with me and I'm an Indesign ACE.

Hi Gavin,

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the new feature. Is it possible for you grab screenshots of InDesign showing the layers palette when you have selected:

  • the object that is suppose to trigger the popup
  • the clickable area associated with the popup
  • the popup object

This way it might be possible to figure out why it is not working.

Best regards,

I'm also trying to realize a popup and it's not working. I compared with the example and i did the same, but it's not working. If I test 1 image, no group, on the A-layer, it works. But I have a group with several images which I want to popup, for now I just tried to pop up one of the images and it's not poping in the reviewer. The settings are the same as I use one single image, what am I doing wrong?

Best regards,

Miriam

Hi Miriam,

You cannot select to have objects in a group to show separately. Either you select to show the whole group or ungroup and show specific images within the group, every clickable area goes to anew image.

Hi Anders,

It works now. Thanks. But now I have a different problem. The settings have to be 3.10 min mib. But if I export and go to the production tool, it has a problem, because the Mib version is 3.0 and I can't change that. Not in the brand settings or anything, the only choice I have is 3.0.

I updated the production tool etc.. We made the original app in May, now we want to update the app, using the old designs, can that give a problem?

Thank you!

Best regards,

Miriam

Hi Miriam,

Open Production Tool and click the preferences tab. In the remove the brand settings file. See if this solves your problem.

It is no problem updating the app. But you cannot have any 4.0 mibs in the app before the app is updated in the Appstore.

I have a problem with the pop up as well. This one is different. I keep getting a "null" message error. I have placed my thumbnail image on the B main layer - selected it as a popup and gave it "popup://name".  I then put the image that will pop up when the thumbnail is selected and placed it on the B popup layer. I have also given it the same ID as I did for the thumbnail. When I preview - I keep getting a "null" message error. I really need an answer tonight if someone can help. Major deadline on this project tomorrow. I have spent 5 hours trying to figure out the problem. Thanks in advance.

Hi Shawn,

It sounds as though the clickable area is referencing an object that doesn't exist. Make sure that the hotspot is set set to Hotspot type: Popup and that the url to the popup is correct.
