Mag+ Reviewer app crashing

Hi,

When reviewing a design using the Mag+ Reviewer app, the application seems to crash and close quite often. The app that I'm reviewing is quite content rich (lots of video, audio, etc.), do you think this might be a file size issue, or something else causing the instability?

When the Reviewer does crash, I have to then go back to the Production Tool and Review All again, which can be a little time-consuming (this can be especially problematic if we're in a meeting with clients, etc.). So is there a way of reopening the previously reviewed app in the Reviewer after a crash?

Hope you can help!

Thanks,

Duncan

What I learned with crashing apps is it is always better when you have all other apps closed. I mean closing it from memory altogether by double clicking the home button and then closing the app from there.

another thing is also it helps is there is a minimum of 1GB space free in the iPad.

If it still crashes, then usually (for me) it has been within the issue, such as links etc.

When does your app crash? for me it used to crash whenever I clicked certain links. What I discovered later was that the links that used to crash my apps had wrong

selections. When infact my actual link was addressed to a jumplink, I had accidentally chosen 'link'.

Let me know how or when it crashes and I will try to help as much as I can.

Thanks,

Abbu

Hi Abbu,

Thanks for your input. The crashes seemed to happen fairly randomly, a couple of times have been when viewing external links (google maps etc.), or embedded HTML.

I'll try your tip about closing all other apps, that definitely makes sense. I'll recheck all my links, etc., and keep testing! I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers for you help, much appreciated.

Still having stability issues. Seems to occur most often just swiping quickly between different verticals. Although it's still quite sporadic – making it difficult to replicate.

When an app is reviewed, is it stored on the iPad anywhere? If it is, is there anyway to access this so that can just re-open it and not have to review the whole issue again?

Thanks,

It looks like a memory problem to me. As I mentioned before the same thing happened to me while swiping quickly between verticals. In my case I double checked and  fixed all my links and it worked like a charm.

In the begining, I did a lot of trial and error. Such as replicating a working file's template and pasting the contents from the crashing vertical. (The vertical which was nextwhen I swiped).

Also, try to review selected verticals without the verticals with the heavy media, or just basic trial and error stuff. Like 2 vericals first, then if it worked add one more vertical, etc..

It is very time consuming, but in the end you can be sure that it will not crash on a clients ipad or during a demo.

Hope you get a fix soon or someone from Mag+ Support has a better idea.

Regards,

Abbu

Thanks again. I'll keep trying to narrow it down to specific places, and see if there are any issues.

We have a few iPad 2 in the office with the same iOS 5.0.1 and 1 particular iPad could never open Mag+ Reviewer 3.2. It opens up showing the 'Loading...' screen for a second then quit.

That iPad 2 is jailbroken so I can look into CrashReporter. If someone from Mag+ is reading this I can send them the log file to explore.

After following the instructions in this video on how to make popups, without HTML ( http://vimeo.com/36814562 ) when viewing on the i pad viewer on my i pad the viewer app crashes.  Now I have tried reinstalling the viewer  on i pad, new version of mag+ 3.2 and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jason

I'm also having troubles with the iPad 3 and reviewer, keeps crashing when reviewing from Production tool. I have the latest versions. Sometimes the same mib works perfectly, other times it crashes. Any others that are experiencing that?

When mine started to crash after putting in a modal popup, I thought it might be memory issues.  I tried it again on an iPad 3 that had more memory than my iPad 2, closed all open applications, and the moment I tapped on the hotspot, it still crashed.

I also have that same crashing problem in reviewer. How can i be sure when i publish my mag+ magazine that it wont crash? I have triple checked my Mib:s and so on... Also the crashing is totally random.

Hi Antti,

If the mib is crashing in the Reviewer there is probably a big chance that it will be crashing in the app in the end.

How big is your mib? Is it for retina? How many verticals in the mib? Are you using many html objects?

Is it possible that the ipad first generation is too old for bigger Mag+ publishes? My first generation ipad keeps crashing the reviewer totally randomly but ipad 2&3 does not. I cant solve the ipad 1 crashing issue. My mib size is 53mb and i have 19 verticals. My issue have 2 videos and about 15 html elements.

Hi Antii,

The problem is probably caused by the html elements. We recommend to keep the size of html elements to up to 5mb per vertical as the iPad's memory can have trouble handling bigger elements.

None of my html folders are bigger than 4,5 mb. My videos are 4,7mb and 1,5mb.

Since im publishing MAG+ Per issue it would be nice that it could work for all ipads because i cant make any correction after i have published it. Is it possible that i send my Mib if you can figure out whats wrong with it?

If the html objects are on verticals close to each other it might also cause problems. It is probably nothing wrong with the file as it is working on iPad2 and 3. It is probably just memory overload for iPad 1 as it has half the memory. Next week an update will be released with several bug fixes, for example better memory handling of html objects for iPad1. If you would build your app in Mag+ publish now it will contain these fixes so you could test the issue in it before you submit it to the AppStore.

Sorry to jump on the end of this thread, but I have an issue with crashing videos.

On my vertical I have one landscape and one portrait master, both of the same jpg (a page from my print magazine). Both of these masters are enable to zoom to make them easier to read. I have a video clip (4.5mb) on both masters. I can zoom by double tapping on both master, but as soon as I press the video button, the page crashes. I had tried the same pages but without zoom enabled and they work fine, so it looks as though it's a conflict there. Do you have any advice on how to get around this?

Thanks

Hello Ian,

How much zoom % are you applying?  Sometimes combining the zoom with other features can cause apps to be unstable.  If you'd like I'd be happy to take a look at your file.
