What's a #2038 error?

Please help!  Everyone in my office is getting a #2038 error when we try to push our issue out for review. It was working fine this morning and then went haywire. I've doublechecked the Push service addresses on our devices and the WiFi network. Nothing is working!

The ”2038”-error is a runtime-error that can occur in a flash application accessing resources over a network or even a local filesystem. This error is raised whenever the flash runtime is unable to read file information through a file reference.

  • Make sure you have the push-option enabled in the right corner of the production tool.
  • Make sure you have the correct IP entered under settings.
  • Make sure you didn't enter a review url when creating the brand in brand settings editor.
  • Make sure you haven't disabled the Push-function on the iPad. Go into the iPad Settings and in the left row, tap "Mag+ Reviewer". Next, tap "Authoring settings" and make sure Push Service is enabled.
  • Make sure the Review mib folder isn't locked. (settings > review mib folder)
  • Make sure you have have enough space to create a review mib on your computer.

If everything above looks right, let us know and we will do our best to help you out!

You could also try this, setup your computer so that you can see hidden files.

Here's how to set it up on a Mac to view hidden files:

Open Terminal, type this command, and press Enter:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles

Here's how to to set it up in Windows 7 to view hidden files: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Show-hidden-files

Then go to your folder that you have selected to export to. If there's a hidden file in there called "ISSUE.LOCK", delete it and restart Production Tool.

Let me know if that solves your problem.

Hmmm...it started working over the weekend without me doing anything different. Then, last night, it stopped again and I got a message about error 2038 but this time, it called it a global error. I tried all the things you suggested, but it still doesn't work. Is there an emergency number I can call when this happens while on deadline?

Hi Stephanie,

Are you sure that you haven't made any changes to the wi-fi? Are you still able to review from the InDesign plugin?

You can also check these settings to make sure everything is set up correctly.

  • Make sure the iPad and computer is connected to the same wi-fi network
  • Make sure you are logged in in the Reviewer app on your iPad under "User Settings"
  • Check your iPad IP and port under "Help" in the Reviewer app
  • To make sure your iPad and computer are connected, start the Reviewer app on your iPad and log in under User Settings. Start a web browser on your computer. Enter the ip and port address given under "Help" in the Mag+ Reviewer app (e.g. 123.45.67.89:50000) in the search window and you should should see something similar to the attached the screenshot. If not, the computer and iPad aren't on the same network or the IP is wrong.

-Another reason for why Review might not work can be that the InDesign template included in the downloaded Mag+ bundle hasn't been used.

Eventually, the only thing that worked was to restart my computer. Go figure.

Hi all,

If you are still having the 2038 error in Production tool and none of the above works. Go into your issue folder. In there you should find a "verticals" folder and an "issue.xml" file. Move all other files and folders away from that folder and try to review again. That solved the problem for another person I've been in contact with, it seemed as though some of the temporary files created were harmed somehow.

Anders

I keep getting error #2038--I moved files out of the verticals folder like suggested above, now nothing works--even my brand is not recognized. I'm supposed to send a MIB this morning for client review--luckily I created the mib before everything stopped working. Is there some way to review the MIB file? Simple MIB pusher won't work in OS 10.6.8.
Text below shows what happened when I entered the link you provided in my server.
http://www.magplus.com/demo-mibs/
{"payload":[{"name":"Mag+ Design examples.mib","mib_url":"http:\/\/www.magplus.com\/demo-mibs\/Mag+ Design examples.mib","size":73547380,"filemtime":1341920538}],"status":"ok","url":"http:\/\/www.magplus.com\/demo-mibs\/"}
When I entered the code suggested in apple terminal I got this message:

Last login: Fri Oct 5 10:36:47 on ttys000

new-host-5:~ joebartosnyc$ defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles

2012-10-05 11:10:22.755 defaults[692:903]

Rep argument is not a dictionary

Defaults have not been changed.

new-host-5:~ joebartosnyc$

What should I do now that nothing, not even my brand is recognized when I try to review my verticals?

The problem fixed itself spontaneously. Sure would like to figure out a way to review a MIB on my iPad as a workaround. As I said before, Simple MIB Pusher doesn't work in OS 10.6.8. I watched the video:

http://www.magplus.com/how-to-review-an-unpublished-app-remotely/

The setting he shows don't come up on the iPad--there are no Author settings. I entered the url for my drop box in the reviewer settings, but that didn't work either--no connection.

Any suggestions for reviewing a MIB file on the iPad?

Still trying to find a way to review a MIB since I'm getting the error #2038 again and again and can't review my file. I created a dropbox account and input the url for a remote review server to populate the Library with MIB files to review. I get a corrupt MIB file message, even though one of the MIB files I created was OK when I was able to review it a s a pushed file before my error #2038 message. (The url I entered was the link that briefly appeared before my dropbox downloaded the MIB: https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/MIB/SF.SolarFlare.1.mib?w=e08e2e02 and the url: https://www.dropbox.com/home/MIB that is from my MIB folder doesn't enable a connection)

Is it possible to get a step by step explanation of how to review a MIB file?

Your video:  http://www.magplus.com/how-to-review-an-unpublished-app-remotely/ leaves out how to get a valid url from dropbox and where to enter it, since the author's setting the video mentions is not available in the current reviewer app under the iPad settings. I did enter a url in the url window available through the apps own settings, but I'm not sure the url is correct. Also, as I mentioned, Simple MIB pusher doesn't work in 1OS 0.6.8.

Hi Joe,

The 2038 appears if the produciton is not able to connect with your iPad. In most cases this is due to an unstable wi-fi network. In order to review a mib remotely you can either upload it to your dropbox account and then open it on your ipad using the dropbox app. To review the other way the computer needs to be connected to the same wifi as the iPad.

I have same issue with Error #2038. Just reviewing one Vertical is okay but all doesn't work.

Just randomly work....about 10/1 or less. It never happened before

Hi Hyejung,

  • Where is the problem happening? In InDesign or the Production tool? Is it only happening to specific verticals or all of them?

  • Some clients have had problems with applications such as little snitch blocking the connection: http://support.magplus.com/entries/22206523

@Hyejung: How many verticals are there in your issue? How big is the issue?

Potential problems:

  • The total mib file is too big causing Production tool to crash when bundling the issue. (usually happens if the mib is above 800mb in size)

  • The network connection cuts out during the push to the iPad causing it to fail.

  • There is a problem with one of the verticals in the issue (huge html objects or huge videos) whihc is casuing the production not being able to bundle the issue.

A way to troubleshoot would be to click "create mib", if the production tool is able to create the mib then the problem is probably caused by bad connection between the computer and the iPad. If the Production tool is able to create the mib file. Try using the simple mib pusher (http://support.magplus.com/entries/21865817) to push the mib file to the iPad instead.

Let me know how it works out!

@Hyejung: How many verticals?

It definitely sounds as there is problem with the connection causing the push to cutout.

17 Verticals. I would like to try with iOS Simulator.

May I get 3.5 version of iOS Simulator?

Thank you Anders for kind answer for my endless questions.

I could transfer to i-Pad after about 40 times attempt(or more).

I think I was just lucky. I don't think I sove the problem.

There are some possible causes.

- I tested 4 i-pads (i-Pad1, 2, white, and retina). And this problem occurred only this time on the retina (upgrade 3.0 to 4.0 for reviewing 3.5 MIB file).

ipad2, and 1 work well but only retina has the error.

Do you think MIB Optimizer is the possible solution for this issue? (http://support.magplus.com/entries/21868426-the-mib-optimizer)

Thank you,

Hyejung

Hi Daniel,

The 2038 error is network related. Are you able to view the Mag+ Upload Service page in your web browser?

Anders

No, I can't view the page in my browser.

I am sure both computer and iPad are using the same network, both on the same wifi. I've done all of below:

  • - Make sure you have the push-option enabled in the right corner of the production tool.
  • - Make sure you have the correct IP entered under settings.
  • - Make sure you didn't enter a review url when creating the brand in brand settings editor.
  • - Make sure you haven't disabled the Push-function on the iPad. Go into the iPad Settings and in the left row, tap "Mag+ Reviewer". Next, tap "Authoring settings" and make sure Push Service is enabled.
  • - Make sure the Review mib folder isn't locked. (settings > review mib folder)
  • - Make sure you have have enough space to create a review mib on your computer.

Also, I've checked my Issue-folder for any locked files, but there is none (I'm displaying hidden files as well). The filesize of the vertical isn't relevant since I've tried a new one with just one single object.

Am I missing something here? What else can I do? I'm using Windows 7 and the latest version of Mag+ (4.1). I've tried on iPad Retina (mag+4.1) and iPad1 (4.0.4).

I'm thankful for all the help since this is urgent.

It seems to be some kind of problem with the webserver within the Mag+ Reviewer app. I can't access it using my browser either. My colleague has tried on his computer as well, same problem there. Also the same problem occurs on my Mac if i test it there. However, reviewing on the iOS Simulator works.

As of now it's impossible to work blindfolded. I have urgent updates that needs to be sent to client, so if I could get some support it'd be more than appreciated.

I had problems 'reviewing all' pushing from the production tool. All was working fine and then one day when trying to review all I got the above error code.

The problem was due to the 'Push Service: 000.000.000.0:50000' number under Reviwer user settings not automatically updating. Make sure to check your IP Address under the iPad Settings> Wi-Fi>Choose a Network>IP Address.

My IP Adress under Setting was different to under the mag+ Reviewer User Settings.

Update your Mib push address in the Mag+ Production Preferences. Should work now.
