Tips - Video Best Practices

This article offers advice on settings to use for videos embedded in mag+ Issues. In an ideal scenario, since the size of video files can be enormous, it's best to resize embedded videos to fit the devices you are targeting. This helps keep the mag+ Issue size as small as possible and allows downloads to occur much faster.

You can avoid large download times for your Issues if you simply point a URL to videos hosted by a content delivery network like Akamai, YouTube, Brightcove, etc. The tradeoff is that your user must have an active internet connection in order to view the video content.

Converting Video for Mobile Devices

A variety of third-party software exists to convert videos to a format suitable for mobile devices. mag+ recommends HandBrake for video conversion for the following reasons:

  • HandBrake is free
  • Supports Windows, OS X, and Linux platforms
  • Offers a variety of settings for different mobile platforms

For more information on HandBrake, including how to download it, visit the HandBrake website.

The following settings are recommended for HandBrake and other third-party video conversion tools:

  • Framerate: 30 fps
Framerates lower than 30 fps may experience trouble playing on the iPad Air.
  • Video Quality Bitrate: 1400 kbps for a fullscreen video
Videos smaller than fullscreen can have a lower bitrate.
  • Encoding: 2-pass
2-pass encoding will go through the video twice, making it smaller.
  • Audio Bitrate: No higher than 160 kbps.
Note: It is always best to test different video settings on your targeted devices in order to ensure the best quality and performance.

General Video Specifications

While it's possible to embed 1080p movies into a Mag+ Issue, the tradeoff between file size and image quality is typically not worth it. If you decide to create a 1080p video for your Issue, be sure to use a lower resolution version in layouts for devices that cannot display 1080p content.
